UW awarded NIH grant for training in advanced data analytics for behavioral and social sciences


The College of Washington’s Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology, or CSDE, together with companions within the Center for Statistics and the Social Sciences and the eScience Institute, is amongst eight awardees throughout the nation chosen to develop coaching packages in superior information analytics for inhabitants well being by the Nationwide Institutes of Well being’s Workplace of Behavioral and Social Sciences Analysis.

This five-year, $1.eight million coaching program on the UW will fund 25 academic-year graduate fellowships, develop a brand new coaching curriculum and contribute to methodological advances in well being analysis on the intersection of demography and information science.

The brand new coaching program can be led by Zack Almquist, assistant professor of sociology, and can construct on CSDE’s graduate certificates in demographic strategies by integrating coaching in superior statistics and computational strategies.

The inaugural cohort will start this system in October and consists of graduate college students Ian Kennedy, Neal Marquez and Crystal Yu, all in sociology; Emily Pollock in anthropology; and Aja Sutton in geography.

“Our college are on the forefront of analysis packages grounded in superior information analytics,” stated Robert Stacey, dean of the UW’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “This grant acknowledges the necessary interdisciplinary work taking place throughout the UW, and notably within the social sciences, to construct this data into much-needed schooling and coaching packages.”

Tyler McCormick, affiliate professor of sociology and statistics, and Jon Wakefield, professor of statistics and biostatistics, led the grant software with help from Sara Curran, director of the CSDE and a professor of worldwide research, public coverage and sociology, together with college affiliated with CSDE, CSSS and the eScience Institute.
